Ghulam Nabi Azad's exit from Congress is indeed a major cause of concern for the party, especially when Rahul Gandhi is about to launch his 'Bharat Jodo Yatra' in order to counter the ruling party. Let's have a look at the perspective given by Dr. P. C. Singh.
The Senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad’s departure from the grand old party is unfortunate. It is neither good for the Congress, nor for the people in general. It was shocking for the common people who have some interest in Polity. It is so because a senior Congress leader like him never invited any charge of corruption in his public life. He enjoyed a clean image in his fifty years of career in the Congress party and the governments. This distinction is a rare phenomenon these days.
That is probably why in the official briefing on the issue, the congress spokespersons, Ajay Maken and Jairam Ramesh called it sad and uncalled-for. It is indeed a major cause of concern for the congress especially when Rahul Gandhi is about to launch his “Bharat Jodo Yatra’ in order to counter the ruling party at the centre in the next Parliamentary poll and use this opportunity to revive Congress.
The reasons behind Mr. Azad’s decision to quit the party is well articulated in the letter written to the Party High command, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi. His grievances are genuine except probably of his emphasis that while senior, committed and seasoned leaders like him in the party are ignored, newcomers sycophants are being promoted. This kind of autocratic rule is not new to the Congress culture and is a common feature virtually in all political parties in the country today except probably the left organizations.
When Mr. Azad joined the Congress it was headed by Mrs.Indira Gandhi and his son Sanjay Gandhi. After his departure from Congress Mr. Azad has made it clear that he will float his own political outfit in the home state. However ,it is too early to assess the prospect of this proposed party in communally surcharged state like J&K . In the past ,a number of leading lights from Congress had left the party but some lost into oblivion and very few could manage to survive. Whatever be his future but the noble politician who was admired by his well wishers across the party has earned the national sympathy by finally saying good-bye to the parent organization.
